Following a raid conducted on 22nd July, 2003 by U.S. forces on a residence in Mosul Iraq, a protracted firefight ensued in which Uday Hussein was killed along with his brother Qusay and two other people.

He also took the brunt of a grenade blast after he used his body to shield another Marine from enemy fire. Kasal killed the gunman responsible for the attack on his and his men.
