Apollo Commander, Neil A Armstrong. Born 5th August 1930 in Ohio, Armstrong served as a naval aviator from 1949 to 1952 where he flew 78 combat missions during the Korean War. He later joined NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics), NASA's predecessor, as a research pilot and was a project pilot on many pioneering high speed aircraft, including the 4,000 mph X-15. In 1962, Armstrong was transferred to astronaut status.
